Tools for Researchers

As stewards for the game’s history, the USGA Museum’s Research Center seeks to be a resource to all those who might have a question or need assistance with a research project. Even if we do not know the answer or have the necessary materials in our collection, we will attempt to assist you in any way we can.

In order to assist you in your research, the Research Center maintains a number of online resources. If you can not find what you are looking for, please contact a member of the staff or make an appointment to view the collections.

USGA Library Catalog

The USGA Library Catalog contains records for each of the more than 22,000 volumes in our vast collection. Users can search by keyword, title, author, subject, publication date, and type of publication. Please note that the subject headings do not correspond to the Library of Congress subject headings. Rather the Library’s classification system was created to reflect the uniqueness of the collection and the historiography of golf. Please use the subject headings as a guide as you navigate the catalog, which is updated on a regular basis.

The Seagle Electronic Golf Library

Named in honor of Janet Seagle, the Museum’s first Curator, SEGL (Seagle Electronic Golf Library) is a digital library of books and magazines from the late 1800s and early 1900s. SEGL contains PDF files of books and magazines that are no longer available to researchers due to preservation concerns. Users with Adobe Acrobat will be able to read and text-search these early publications. New titles are added each year.

The Research Center maintains bibliographies on frequently researched topics. New bibliographies are added on a regular basis.

The Research Center maintains information on every USGA championship, including scores, media reports, and images, including this stunning image from the 1963 U.S. Women’s Amateur at Taconic Golf Club.

For more than ten years, the USGA has been collecting the personal stories of many of the game’s greatest legends, including two-time U.S. Open champion Gene Sarazen, to create the Pamela Fox Emory Oral History Collection.
